The Transience of Silence

Celebrating Tanja Balac and Looking Beyond June

BRUSSELS / SKOPJE – As the final days of June draw to a close, we find ourselves reflecting on a transformative month of visual and psychological exploration guided by our Artist of the Month, Tanja Balac. Her intricate paintings and award-winning cinematic works have provided a profound visual anchor for our community, beautifully mirroring the philosophical inquiries we are preparing to bring to life in the Philosophy Arena in Pula, Istria, this August.

Autumn Horizons: Expanding “Displaced” at MANU

For those captivated by her June feature, the coming months promise a deeper engagement with Balac’s evolving vision. This autumn, she will present a highly anticipated selection from her critically acclaimed “Displaced” series at the prestigious Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU) in Skopje.

While the core of this series previously garnered international attention during its exhibition at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, this upcoming presentation represents a major evolution. Rather than simply revisiting existing territory, Balac is expanding the project with brand-new paintings and drawings. The exhibition is explicitly curated to unlock an entirely fresh reading of the series, challenging viewers to confront and deepen the profound questions it raises.

Invisible Threads: A New Long-Term Inquiry

Simultaneously, Balac is shifting her creative focus toward the foundational layers of a new, ambitious, long-term research project. This upcoming body of work will turn its lens toward family narratives, approached not as mere private biographies, but as complex structural spaces.

Balac is deeply interested in how memories, systemic silences, inherited traumas, values, and behavioural patterns are subtly transmitted from one generation to the next. Through this inquiry, she explores the delicate boundary where personal, lived experience gradually crystallizes into collective memory. By weaving together deep academic research, personal conversations, archival materials, and fluid visual interpretations, the project seeks to make visible the unseen threads that influence our capacity for empathy and our relationships with the “other.” True to her avant-garde nature, the final physical form of the artwork will be allowed to emerge organically through the research process itself.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Tanja Balac for an inspiring month of boundary-pushing art, and we look forward to witnessing these profound projects unfold.
